More times than not, there’s a leak somewhere in your system. Easy enough to find and fix, but what if there’s something more going on?  

Your vehicle’s air conditioning system is quite complex and works the same way as your home air conditioner.  Not only is it responsible for cooling your car down, it also reduces the humidity.  You have five main components – compressor, condenser, drier or accumulator, evaporator and expansion valve.  A fault in any one of these parts can cause your car’s air conditioner to fail.

5 Reasons Why Your Car’s Air Conditioner May Not Be Working

Here are the 5 main reasons many auto air conditioning systems fail:

  1. There is a leak (or leaks) somewhere in the system. Leaks within the compressor or hoses cause the majority of car air conditioner problems.

Caution: In older vehicles (pre-1994), refrigerant will run out on its own.  If your vehicle still uses the R-12 Freon, regulations require that it must be replaced by a professional.

  1. When turned on, the air conditioning system is noisy. This could mean there are problems with the compressor.  It may need replacement.
  2. The temperature of the air coming out of the vents fluctuates.  Many times this is from the buildup of moisture in one of the hoses or assemblies.  Ice actually begins to accumulate and clog the air conditioner.   3. When turned on, the air conditioner seems to be struggling to blow air or it doesn’t work at all.  This usually happens when there is a problem with your vehicle’s electrical system, like a battery that is old and weak.
